Investors in Madagascar

Who finances Malagasy businesses, at what size, in which sectors - kept at firm level and updated in place rather than rebuilt.

Madagascar's financing problem is rarely a shortage of interest. It is a matching problem: the businesses that need ten to five hundred thousand dollars are too small for the regional private equity funds and too large or too unconventional for a standard bank facility, and neither side has a reliable way to find the other.

The institutions that do finance Malagasy businesses fall into a few groups. Commercial banks and their SME desks lend against security and cash flow. A small number of impact and growth funds, some Madagascar-based and some regional, take minority equity or quasi-equity positions in established companies. Development finance institutions and bilateral agencies work mostly through those funds and through the banks rather than directly. Guarantee schemes sit alongside all of them and change what a bank can say yes to.

This register records which of these a firm is, because the answer changes what a founder should prepare. An equity investor wants a shareholding conversation and a five-year view; a bank wants security and a repayment profile; a guarantee fund is a party to someone else's decision rather than a lender. Presenting the same document to all three is the most common reason a good Malagasy business gets no answer.

KAPEX screens before it introduces. A file submitted here is reviewed by the Capital & Funding Cluster's analysts and reaches only the investors whose stated mandate it falls inside - which for Madagascar usually means a much shorter list than the founder expected, and a much better one. Nothing about a project is published: the register is of investors, never of the businesses seeking capital.

Frequently asked questions

Is my project published on this site?
No. KAPEX publishes a register of investors. Projects are never listed publicly; they are screened privately and shown only to investors whose mandate they match, after which the project holder controls what is shared.
What ticket sizes are realistic in Madagascar?
The register shows each firm's own stated range rather than an average. In practice the platform handles files from roughly USD 25,000 to USD 50 million, with anything beyond that considered case by case.
Do I need to be in Antananarivo?
No. Submission, screening and introduction all happen through the platform, and our analysts work across the country and the region.
How long does the initial screening take?
Our team begins the review within 72 working hours of submission, and you are notified at each step.
